Sono quattro cavalieri, ognuno legato a una disgrazia, che cavalcherebbero sulla terra il giorno dell' Apocalisse, segnando la fine del mondo. I loro nomi sono: "Pestilenza, Guerra, Carestia e Morte"
I quattro cavalieri non sarebbero portatori di libertà nella terra di Israele ma porterebbero rovina e distruzione in tutto il mondo dando inizio alla Fine del Mondo.Nell'apocalisse i quattro cavalieri vengono rappresentati come mali intangibili e inevitabili che l'umanità si porterà avanti fino allo sfociare della totale perdizione del genere umano.
Il primo dei quattro cavalli, porta con sé un arciere a cavallo, quindi abile nell'uso delle armi, simbolo di supremazia bellica.
Un confronto con il Salmo 45 versetti da 4 a 7, che parla della venuta del Messia, evidenzia notevoli somiglianze. Giovanni, che conosceva bene questo Salmo, alla vista del primo cavaliere molto probabilmente ha pensato al Messia Gesù Cristo. L'interpretazione di molti è pertanto che il cavaliere sul cavallo bianco altri non sia che Gesù Cristo nella sua seconda venuta quale Re incoronato da Dio per eseguire un giudizio. Questo cavaliere è dunque GESU’, che in Apocalisse 1:16 ha una spada affilata a doppio taglio e in Apocalisse 19:11 combatte con giustizia.
