Cerbero nella mitologia greca era uno dei mostri a guardia dell'ingresso degli inferi su cui regnava il dio Ade. È un mostruoso cane a tre teste, di cui Zachary Grey, scrittore inglese del secolo XVIII, afferma:
«Questo Cane con tre Teste rappresenta il passato, il presente e l'avvenire, che contengono, o come chi dicesse divorano, tutte le cose. Che Ercole lo vincesse, dimostra che le Azioni eroiche sono vittoriose del Tempo e sussistono nella Memoria della Posterità.»
Tutto il suo corpo è ricoperto, anziché di peli, di velenosissimi serpenti, che ad ogni suo latrato si rizzano, facendo sibilare le proprie orrende lingue. Il suo compito è impedire ai vivi di entrare ed ai morti di uscire.
Nell'antichità anche il "nudo suolo" era definito Cerbero (o "lupo degli dei") poiché ogni cosa seppellita pareva essere divorata in breve tempo. Il termine è entrato nella lingua italiana a designare, per antonomasia e spesso ironicamente, un guardiano arcigno e difficile da superare.
