Tratto dal romanzo omonimo scritto da Stephen King nel 1977, il film narra il dramma di una famiglia che deve svernare in totale isolamento in un hotel in alta montagna. Il figlio, il piccolo Danny, dimostra di possedere un complesso di facoltà extrasensoriali, qui denominate the shining (tradotto come "la luccicanza"), che lo portano ad avere visioni dell'oscuro passato del luogo e degli eventi futuri.
Shining rappresenta una tappa dell'itinerario di attraversamento-appropriazione-sfondamento dei generi cinematografici attuata da Kubrick nel corso della sua carriera. Divenuto presto un cult movie, è entrato nell'immaginario collettivo ed è stato a volte classificato come il miglior film horror in assoluto. Shining è stato eletto al 2º posto tra i migliori film horror della storia del cinema, dopo L'esorcista, in una classifica stilata dalla rivista londinese Time Out.
