Questo anello realizzato in Argento 925 raffigurante un Hyottoko fa parte della collezione "Japanized".
Hyottoko e’ l’uomo con il foular. Da cosa deriva il suo nome? Alcuni pensano che egli, con una canna di bambu’, stia cercando di accendere il fuoco. Infatti Hyottoko e’ una parola dialettale che deriva da Hi-Otoko (Hi = fuoco Otoko = uomo). Mentre un’altra storia, originaria di Iwate-ken, dice che una volta sarebbe esistito un bambino dalla faccia uguale alla meschera, dal cui ombelico uscivano monete. Egli, di nome Hyoutoku, appariva di notte nelle case della gente dicendo che, se questi avessero messo davanti al focolare una maschera che avesse assomigliato alla sua faccia, avrebbero ricevuto soldi.
Okame si trova di solito assieme ad Hyottoko. Un altro suo nome e’ Otafuku che significa “che porta tanta fortuna”. Molto tempo fa indicava la bellezza, ma con il tempo l’opinione giapponese sulla bellezza e’ cambiata, ed oggi questa maschera indica una donna brutta. Si pensa che Okame derivi dal nome di un monaco donna del periodo Muromachi. Mentre Otafuku ha due origini: una deriva appunto dal fatto che porta fortuna e per questo l’hanno chiamata cosi’. La seconda dice che siccome le sue guance sono cosi’ gonfie da assomigliare ad un pesce palla, le si e’ dato questo nome in quanto in giapponese questo pesce si chiama Fugu.
A Miyazaki Yuga, c’e’ un festival dal 1984 che riprende dei balli che venivano fatti gia’ nel periodo Edo.
