Il cranio ha grosse cavità oculari e presenta una possente dentatura, fatta di 12 incisivi, otto premolari, sei molari e quattro canini, la cui morsa riesce a frantumare l’ossatura delle prede. Nel cranio di un gatto di corporatura media, il cervello arriva a pesare 30 grammi.
La spina dorsale, che ha la stessa mobilità di quella di un serpente, è composta da 50 vertebre. Le vertebre della coda sono un prolungamento della colonna vertebrale.
La cassa toracica è costituita da 13 costole e ha una flessuosità che permette al gatto di poter passare anche in spazi angusti. Ha uno sterno di dimensioni ridotte e, contrariamente a quanto si crede, il gatto ha la clavicola; un frammento è tra i pettorali, così da non impedire a questo predatore di poter effettuare i suoi lesti scatti.
Gli arti inferiori sono formati da 41 ossa mentre quelle posteriori ne hanno 39. Le zampe anteriori terminano con cinque dita, mentre quelle posteriori con quattro e un garretto angolare, oltre la cresta tibiale. Tutte le dita sono dotate di affilatissimi artigli retrattili, fissati alle zampe attraverso i tendini.o.
