Characteristic features of this subspecies are the presence of a particularly pronounced hump (a reserve of fat but mainly of the powerful muscles used to move legs and claws) at shoulder height and the particular grizzled appearance of the coat. This last characteristic (due to the darker hairs inside, tending to gray or straw yellow at the extremity) is more or less evident depending on the season, the individuals or the local strains. If many specimens have a dark brown coat very similar to that of European bears, others have instead shades close to beige, gray or reddish brown. Like other brown bears, it has very strong somatic characters, which allow you to easily distinguish one specimen from another based on the build, length of the muzzle, ears and the shape of the head (which, generally, appears more slender and less shaggy than that of a kodiak).
