Lantern fish
With its wide open mouth, sharp teeth and slightly surprised expression, the black devil, a fish of the genus Melanocetus, looks like it was born for the spotlight.
A female specimen got a close-up on November 17, when, for the first time, this rare abyssal fish was captured in its natural habitat in the deep seas off central California.
A team of researchers observed the animal, just 9 centimeters long, with a remote controlled vehicle (ROV) in Monterey Canyon Bay, about 580 meters deep. Scientists were able to bring him to the surface alive - no easy feat - and have been watching him ever since.
