Lion fish
The head is relatively small, the mouth large, the protruding eyes, surmounted by two growths (also present around the chin). The forehead is high, the back curved, while the belly is relatively flat. The body narrows towards the caudal peduncle, which precedes a rather broad, rounded tail.
The first rays of the dorsal and anal fins are actually venomous spines, well erected by the fish when it is in danger. The venomous apparatus consists of 13 spines on the dorsal fin and 3 in the anal one, all composed of hollow spines connected to a venom gland; the rays of the pectoral fins are full, non-poisonous spines. The livery is basically vertical brown and white stripes, some thin and others wider. The fins are also streaked with white and brown.
It reaches a maximum length of 38cm.
