Godzilla is a kaijū ("mysterious monster") of Japanese cinema, the protagonist of a long series of films starting with Godzilla (1954). His fame has gradually expanded also abroad, so much so that he has become one of the most famous monsters in the world and in the history of science fiction and fantastic cinema, appearing in video games, novels, comics, television series, twenty-nine films produced by Toho and three Hollywood movie. The character is often referred to as "The King of Monsters," a nickname coined in Godzilla, King of the Monsters !, the American version of the 1954 film.
