Mechas are bipedal, although not necessarily; the most frequent form is the humanoid one, but there are also examples of animal-shaped machines (eg dinosaur). In most of the stories they are intended as combat weapons, but even this role is not necessarily the only possible one: for example, there may be mecha with civilian tasks such as police, construction or other. Usually the names by which automata are called varies from work to work. The most popular nomenclatures are the mobile suit, popularized by the Gundam saga, and the more conventional "mech", made famous by the BattleTech wargame and its videogame transposition into the MechWarrior saga, but the names are among the most varied (go from the Knightmare of Code Geass to the kBot of Total Annihilation, passing through the HERCULANs of Metaltech: Earthsiege, for example).
