The behemoth or beemot is a biblical legendary creature, mentioned in the Book of Job (40,15-24).
The word is probably the plural form of the Hebrew בהמה (bəhēmāh - animal). It could therefore be an example of pluralis excellentiae, a Jewish custom of expressing the greatness of something by pluralizing its name. It would indicate, therefore, that the Behemoth is distinguished from other animals by power and strength.
Together with the leviathan and the ziz, she is described as the most extraordinary creature on Earth, unbeatable for all but her creator ("He is the first of God's works; only his Creator threatens him with the sword" Job 40,20) . In some versions of the Bible (e.g. Nuova Riveduta and C.E.I.) the word behemoth is replaced with the name hippopotamus. It is also mentioned by the historian Herodotus. Metaphorically, the name is used to refer to a large and mighty mythological entity, often identified with a devil. In the Infernal Dictionary written by Collin de Plancy, Biemot is cited, in the previous literature, as a hedonistic demon great brewer, that is, a devotee to the mixture of truth with lies, but also the mixture of the excesses of the pleasures of the belly (lust and greed), much which is in fact depicted as an elephant, a hippopotamus, or in any case a well-fed beast.
