The historical Buddha Shakyamuni was born, about 2560 years ago, as Prince Siddhartha Gautama, within a royal family in what is now northern India. From early childhood, he was surrounded by all forms of well-being and beauty, and was able to enjoy a refined education. Texts describe him as tall, strong and blue-eyed. When he was twenty-nine, he left the royal palace for the first time in his life, and met an old man, a sick person and a dead person - experiences he had never known before. He then realized that nothing can be considered permanent and abandoned his princely existence to embark on his meditative quest in the mountains and forests of northern India.
