Horus is an Egyptian deity belonging to the religion of ancient Egypt, one of the most ancient and significant of the Egyptian pantheon. His cult in the Nile Valley extended chronologically from late Prehistoric times to the Ptolemaic era and the Roman domination of Egypt. Over the millennia, it was revered in many forms, analyzed separately by Egyptologists; these heterogeneous aspects of the god probably derived from different perceptions of the same multifaceted divinity, with the emphasis on certain syncretic attributes and assimilations, more complementary than opposed to each other, emblematic of the multiple visions that the ancient Egyptians had of reality. He was assiduously represented as a falcon - lanner falcon or peregrine - or as a falcon-headed man (hieracocephalus) with the Double Crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. He made his appearance in the Egyptian religion as the tutelary deity of Ieracompoli (in Greek City of the Hawk, originally called Nekhen) in Upper Egypt and, consequently, as the first known national deity, especially in relation to the pharaoh, who at that time began to be considered the manifestation of Horus in life and, when dead, of Osiris. In the most common form of the myth, Horus was the son of Isis and Osiris and had a fundamental role in the myth of Osiris, as heir to his father - precisely Osiris - and rival of Seth, the killing god of Osiris. In a different version of the myth, Horus's mother was identified with Hathor, who could also be his wife. Although worshiped in multiple names, or districts, Egyptians, his main center of worship was in Edfu.
