T- Rex
The name Tyrannosaurus Rex means "tyrant king of lizards": "Tyranno" means tyrant in Greek; "Saurus" means lizard in Greek, and "Rex" means "king" in Latin. It was Henry Fairfield Osborn, in 1905, then president of the American Museum of Natural History, who gave him the name Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The T-Rex belonged to the tyrannosauroidea family which included huge and ferocious predatory dinosaurs, with small arms that ended in 2 claws. Other members of the tyrannosaurid family are Albertosaurus, Alectrosaurus, Alioramus, Chingkankousaurus, Daspletosaurus, Eotyrannus, Gorgosaurus, Nanotyrannus, Prodeinodon and Tarbosaurus.
Until the mid-1990s, the tyrannosaurus was thought to be the largest predator ever. But then scientists discovered the "Giganotosaurus" ("Giganotosaurus Carolinii"), a 14 meter long dinosaur that lived in Argentina about 100 million years ago. The most recent discoveries however indicate that the "Spinosaurus" may have been even larger, up to 17 meters in length.
