Who, or who, tries, that is, tries to induce or attract to guilt, to sin, or in any case to do something that should not be or would like to do: you are a real t., an irresistible temptress; Arts, words t.; and in an almost fig. sense: silence t., darkness t.; in particular, devil t., or simply, by definition, the tempter, the devil. Often, for joking hyperbole, of a person who invites us to do something that appears pleasant, but it would be better not to do: she was the temptress, and it's a bit his fault if I gave in.
