Kurt Donald Cobain (Aberdeen, February 20, 1967 - Seattle, April 5, 1994) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, frontman of the grunge musical group Nirvana.

Nirvana, formed by Cobain in 1987 with Krist Novoselic, became in two years one of the pivotal groups of the American alternative rock scene. Since 1991, with the release of the single Smells Like Teen Spirit, considered by the music media to be the "anthem of a generation", Cobain was considered, like years before, Bob Dylan, "spokesperson" of a generation, in his case generation X , although the artist did not like this name.

In the last years of his life Cobain struggled with heroin addiction and media pressure on him and his wife Courtney Love, with whom he had a daughter named Frances Bean. On April 8, 1994, he was found dead in his Seattle home, killed by a shotgun; although officially it was a suicide, in the following years a heated debate developed on the causes of his death.

Cobain has become an icon among the young people of his generation and the next, to the point of still influencing both music and youth culture.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, Cobain was the best artist of the nineties despite his short life. He was also included in 45th place in Rolling Stone's list of 100 best singers and in 73rd place in Rolling Stone's list of 100 best guitarists.

Along with fellow Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, Cobain was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, the first year they were eligible.
