Black panther is the common name with which the black specimens (melanic variants) of some species of felids are indicated. Zoologically speaking, the term panther is synonymous with leopard. The genus Panthera is a taxonomic category that includes all the species of a particular group of felids. In North America the term panther is commonly used to indicate the puma; in Latin America it is more often used for the jaguar. Elsewhere in the world it refers to the leopard (originally the specimens with the longest tail were thought to be panthers and the other leopards; it is a common misconception that the term panther necessarily indicates a melanistic individual).
