Leviathan

Leviathan is a mythological animal described in the Bible as an insatiable and indomitable sea monster.

Leviathan has been called a genus of extinct cetaceans, the first of which was discovered in 2008 in Peru. The species is called Livyatan melvillei.

Some historians of religions identify in Leviathan a loan taken from the Babylonian religion and, more particularly, from the monstrous goddess Tiāmat, destined to be conquered by the "new gods", including Marduk.

Some Jewish commentators of the Bible attributed the shape of a crocodile to Leviathan. This appears to have been inspired by the Egyptian cult of the crocodile god Sobek. According to some Egyptian creation myths, he was the first to emerge from the muddy waters of the original chaos to create the world. The myth is suggested by the Nile crocodile's habit of staying immersed in mud to appear unexpectedly when prey appears.
