The Lutrini (Lutrinae) are a subfamily of carnivores of the Mustelidae family, known by the common name of otter.
There are 13 species of otters divided into 6 genera, with an almost global distribution area.
All otters have a thin, flexible body with short legs. Most have sharp claws for grabbing prey.
The North American river otter was one of the most hunted animals for fur in North America after contact with Europeans.
River otters eat a good variety of fish and crustaceans, as well as small mammals and birds. They are around 1m long and weigh around 5-15 kilograms. They were once present throughout North America, but are now rare or extinct in most places, although the population is flourishing in some parks.
The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is found along the Pacific coast of North America. Their historical range included the shallow waters of the Bering Strait and Kamchatka and extended as far south as Japan. Sea otters have 1 million hairs for every square inch of skin, a rich fur for which they have been hunted to near extinction. By the time they were protected by the 1911 Fur Seal Treaty, the population was so small that the fur trade was unprofitable.
They feed mainly on crustaceans and invertebrates. They usually use rocks as tools to open prey. They are 1m to 2m long and weigh around 30kg.
