With four families, the order is widespread and represented in the tropical and subtropical areas of most of the planet: in particular, biodiversity peaks are reached in South America and Australasia. Some species are native to the temperate areas of the southern hemisphere (such as Tierra del Fuego or New Zealand), and the Carolina parakeet, as the name implies, was widespread before extinction in the central-eastern United States: other species (such as the Alexandrian parakeet and the monk parakeet) have been introduced intentionally or accidentally in temperate areas (including Italy) and have established stable populations there.
