The black widow (Latrodectus mactans (Fabricius, 1775) is a spider belonging to the family Theridiidae and to the genus Latrodectus and is considered one of the most poisonous spiders.
The name derives from the Latin mactans, participle of the verb mactare, which means to kill, sacrifice, in relation to the fact that, in some cases, once the mating is complete, the female kills the male.
