Funk is a term coined in the United States in the fifties, to indicate rhythmic and sound characteristics present in different musical fields. Initially the term was used in jazz to indicate a rough and free from sophistication musical approach, with repetitive riffs and a fast-paced rhythm. Later the adjective funky was used more and more also in other musical fields such as soul and R&B.
The meaning of the word funk (and its adjective funky) in African American slang generally indicates a bad smell, like the odor given off by the body in a state of arousal, and by extension it could mean "sexy", "dirty", "attractive" but also "authentic", that is, original and free from inhibitions.
