Shark
It was Charles Linnaeus who gave the white shark the first scientific name, Squalus carcharias, in 1758. Sir Andrew Smith gave it the generic name of Carcharodon in 1833. In 1873 the generic name was merged with the scientific name given by Linnaeus, thus becoming the current one of Carcharodon carcharias. Carcharodon comes from the ancient Greek term καρχαρόδων karcharódōn (composed of κάρχαρος kárcharos, which means "sharp", with that of ὀδούς, ὀδόντος, odóus, odóntos, which means "tooth"). Since καρχαρίας, karcharías, means "shark", the final meaning is "sharp-toothed shark".
