The great white shark appears to have appeared on the planet during the Miocene while the oldest known fossil has been dated as dating back to 16 million years ago. According to some biologists, the white shark could descend from a gigantic prehistoric shark, the Carcharodon megalodon, because the similarity of the teeth and the very large size have led many scholars to believe that they were closely linked from the evolutionary point of view.
